BIBLE VERSES WORTH MEMORIZING

Since Jesus died to save us from our sins, it is important to know just what sin is.  It is important, too, to remember that we are not to treat the death of Christ with contempt by not caring whether or not we go on living in sin.  Here are some important verses for families to learn together, to help you not to sin.

FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN:

Romans 14:23b

...whatever is not from faith is sin.

James 4:17

Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do, and does not do it, to him it is sin.

1 John 5:17a

All unrighteousness is sin...

Psalm 119:11

Thy word I have treasured in my heart,

That I may not sin against Thee.

1 John 3:4

Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.

NOTE: We base our understanding of lawlessness on the above and other similar passages.

Romans 13:9b, 10

And if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."  Love does not wrong to a neighbor; love therefore is the fulfillment of the law.

Please see our Scripture study on LOVE for Scripture verses on this vital topic.

FOR OLDER CHILDREN, ADD:

1 John 3:5,7,8,10

And you know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin.

7 Little children, let no one deceive you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous;

8 the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

10 By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.

FOR TEENS AND ADULTS, ADD:

Romans 6:12,14,15

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body that you should obey its lusts... 14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law, but under grace.  15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be!

Romans 6:17-18

But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed,

18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

Romans 6:22-23

But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life.

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:12-14

So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh--13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
