A sign at the crossing announced that Jews were to move off the sidewalk when other people came by.

Another sign at the entrance to a store said, "No Jews or Dogs Allowed". Now Tirzah understood why Papa didn't like the idea of wearing the yellow star...

is an exciting novel about two girls, Heidi and Tirzah and their families, in Nazi occupied Poland. Tirzah's family is Jewish, and on the run. Will the Nazi soldiers find them as they hide out in the forest and in the homes of families who are willing to risk their lives to shelter them?

Heidi's gentile family also faces Nazi repression. Soldiers are everywhere and they consider the Jews and all of the Polish people to be "Untermenschen," or sub-humans. When Papa's shop is raided and locked up, how will Heidi's family eat to survive with no job and no money?
